Barcelona with kids

Travelling with children? Barcelona has more for kids than you might think. Here are 8 family favourites, with ages, prices and opening hours, plus ideas for a rainy day and practical tips.

Barcelona Zoo Outdoor

A classic family day in the Ciutadella park, with a wide range of species, discovery centres and activities for children.

L'Aquàrium de Barcelona Indoor

Sharks, rays and a big ocean tank with a glass tunnel, in the Port Vell next to the Rambla de Mar. A good wet-weather plan.

CosmoCaixa Indoor

A hands-on science museum with a flooded Amazon forest, a geological wall and a planetarium. Good for curious kids of any age.

Tibidabo Amusement Park Outdoor

The mountaintop park above the city, with old-fashioned rides, a Ferris wheel and views over Barcelona. You get up by the Cuca de Llum funicular.

Museu Blau (Natural Sciences Museum) Indoor

A natural history museum in a striking blue building by the sea, with a children's space where small kids can touch and play ("Planet Life" is a separate exhibition).

Parc de la Ciutadella Outdoor

Barcelona's central park, with a lake with rowing boats, a big fountain and lawns for a picnic, next to the zoo.

Poble Espanyol Outdoor

An open-air village of 117 buildings from all over Spain, with craft workshops and a free "Pouch Game" for families.

Barceloneta Beach Outdoor

A 422 m city beach, 79 m wide on average, and smoke-free. Easy for a short sea stop.

Tips for families

Under-16s are often free

CosmoCaixa and the Museu Blau are free for under-16s, and the zoo, Aquàrium and cable car are free for the youngest (under 3, under 3 and under 4). Tibidabo is free below 90 cm.

Free museums on Sunday afternoon

Many municipal museums are free on Sundays from 15:00, and on the first Sunday of the month all day (the Museu Blau, for instance).

Check the Tibidabo calendar

In autumn the Amusement Park is only open at weekends and on bank holidays. The Panoramic Area with views is open every day from March to December.

Late dinners and the siesta

Many restaurants serve lunch from about 13:30 and dinner from about 20:30. With small children, look for places that open earlier, or plan a picnic in a park.

Beat the queues

The Aquàrium sells a Flexiticket valid for 90 days without a fixed date, and Park Güell and Tibidabo are best booked online beforehand.
