What it means for your trip
On a public holiday in Barcelona most shops and offices are closed, though tourist areas keep some shops, restaurants and sights open. Public transport usually runs a Sunday-style timetable. A holiday that falls on a Sunday is not always moved: in Catalonia it often simply disappears that year.
Public holidays in 2026
- Thu 1 January New Year's Day (Any Nou / Año Nuevo)
The first day of the year, after a late New Year's Eve. Most shops are closed and the city starts slowly. - Tue 6 January Epiphany (Three Kings' Day) (Reis / Reyes)
The day children get their presents from the Three Kings, after the Cavalcade parade the evening before. Shops are closed. - Fri 3 April Good Friday (Divendres Sant / Viernes Santo)
The Friday before Easter, with religious processions in some districts. Shops and offices are closed. Holy Thursday is not a holiday in Catalonia. - Mon 6 April Easter Monday (Dilluns de Pasqua / Lunes de Pascua)
A Catalan holiday (not national) that takes the place of Holy Thursday. Families eat the traditional mona cake. Shops and offices are closed. - Fri 1 May Labour Day (Festa del Treball / Día del Trabajo)
Workers' day, with union demonstrations in the city centre. Shops and offices are closed. - Mon 25 May Whit Monday (Dilluns de Pasqua Granada / Lunes de Pentecostés) Local holiday

A Catalan holiday: the night before, bonfires and fireworks on the beaches and in the squares. Most of the city is closed or sleeping late the next day. - Sat 15 August Assumption Day (L'Assumpció / La Asunción)
